Maxey Visual Art 2018-2019

Hello from the Maxey Art Room and from Mrs. Hergott!!

Volunteers

Throughout the school year I am in need of volunteers to help with students’ art and sometimes with students projects.  If you are interested in volunteering in the art room, please let me know your availability by emailing me at bhergott@lps.org.  I am very flexible about scheduling and working with your schedule. It would need to be between 9 AM – 3:38 PM.

Maxey Collaborative Community Art Project

All Maxey students will start next week learning about GRIT as an artist, read the book “A Little Bit of Oomph” by Barney Saltzberg and explore how we all make mistakes and how we need to put that extra hard work and effort into everything we do.  Students will also read “The Dot” by Peter Reynolds to get inspired and motivated for International Dot Day (Sept 15). Students will modify and make changes to a circle design – putting in that oomph and adding their own artistic designs.

Look for these designs to be presented in the hallways of Maxey school!!!

Art Schedule

Students have art every 5 days (once a week) for 50 minutes.

Students will have the opportunity to express themselves while using their problem solving skills and a variety of techniques and materials, such as drawing materials, paint, pottery, sculptural materials, printmaking materials and recyclables.  Maxey visual art learning objectives are connected to the LPS Visual Art Standards of Create, Connect, Present and Respond https://home.lps.org/art/

Art Being Sent Home

Students’ art WILL BE SENT  HOME WITH YOUR CHILD! The process in the Maxey art room is that I like to photograph students’ art (volunteers needed), display students’ art (volunteers needed) and then send the art home with students – so check those backpacks on art days.

Masks in 5th Grade Art

The BIG mask-making project will be starting in the art room!!!!
Your son/daughter will choose a partner.  They are told to choose somebody they trust because their partner will be the one placing the plaster bandages on their face.  Some students express a concern about this and I inform them that if they want a parent or an adult to be present the day their mask will be made, you are welcome to join us in the art room.  Please check in at the front desk and head back to the art room (suggested to wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty).

The Maxey art room will provide all materials to decorate the mask but if your son/daughter would like to bring extra materials from home to make their mask more unique – they are welcome to.  If you would like to send extra craft items that you have at home for other students to use in addition to the items your son/daughter will use for their mask – it would be very kind and helpful.  Generosity like this is greatly appreciated by many of the students and myself:)  Please handle the following as you see fit!  The following list includes materials appropriate for the students’ mask unit:

feathers
fur
beads
costume jewelry
*low temp. glue sticks (small round size)
seeds, acorns
sequins
ribbons, yarn

Banner Club

What is Banner Club?  Each year, each elementary school in the LPS district creates a banner that is displayed in the downtown Wells Fargo Bank during Youth Art Month (March).  The banner then travels throughout Lincoln for the next year.  After the banner is done traveling, it returns to Maxey to be displayed in the halls.

Who is Banner Club open to?  Banner Club is open to 5th grade students.

When is Banner Club?  Banner Club begins at 8:15 AM and students are dismissed when school begins.  We will meet in the art room on Wednesdays starting Sept 18.

Students will be split into 3 or 4 groups.  The number of groups may change – this is determined by how many students sign up and return a Parent Permission Slip by September 3.  The schedule will be made after the final list of Banner Club students are finalized and will be advertised in the Maxey Messenger and on this website.

Please call (436 – 1153) or email me (bhergott@lps.org) with questions.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Hergott
