Algebra Syllabus (click here): lists all the “Big Ideas” and their sequence in Algebra. Each “Big Idea” is scored separately on the Chapter tests.

High School Credit:  Algebra in 8th grade is a high school credit course.  All summative assessments are 80% of the overall grade and all formative assignments are 20% of the overall grade.

Re-testing:  All students will have the opportunity to be re-taught any material for which they do not demonstrate initial mastery.  Re-teaching opportunities will occur during class and students may also come in for re-teaching outside of class or to review unmastered concepts from previous tests.  Our chapter tests have been designed to place greater emphasis on student understanding of connected mathematical ideas to promote retention.  Specifically, each chapter test includes a re-testing section of an important connected set of ideas from the previous test. The re-testing section of chapter tests counts for a grade itself, to promote retention, and will also be used to replace a student’s previous grade if it has improved.  In addition, periodic cumulative assessments will be given during class to provide students another opportunity to demonstrate that they have relearned material and will be used to replace grades if the grade improves.  Each cumulative assessment will also count as a grade itself to emphasize the importance of retention.
